It’s hard to imagine a Book Buyer who has read more or done more for launching authors than Sheryl Cotleur. With 40 years in the book business, she has what many readers would consider a dream job. She buys books for all nine of Copperfield's Books' stores in San Francisco's North Bay, and along with the job, she reads incessantly while working with publishers, authors, and editors to discover the best new books. Her contributions, expanding beyond the bookstore, include serving as a jurist for a number of book awards such as National Book Award Fiction jury in 2014, one of the nation's most prestigious literary prizes as well as Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction in 2016 sponsored by the ALA, and Kirkus Prize jury for Nonfiction in 2018.
This is just wonderful. Yarbrough paints a complex story that starts with a hint of a crime novel but it something else entirely. Characters impacted by a terrible accident, both the victim and the perpetrator, struggle to find their way in situations where efforts to reverse the paths they are now on are almost beyond hope. Heartbreakingly tender The Unmade World is a psychologically astute novel that is also beautifully written.
A fantasy novel that is smart and fun with truly engaging central characters, a strong female lead and the intrigue of being set entirely in the ancient Islamic world. The first of a projected trilogy that leaves the reader desperate for the next book immediately.
No wonder this debut collection of short stories was a finalist for the National Book Award. Machado explores in some of the most daring and remarkable ways the female experience. Not at all pedantic but lively, at times even surreal, and infused with gusty sex Machado’s women show up in their lives with all the verve they can muster. While unrelated short stories this reads like a novel.
Another surprise of a debut novel that was shortlisted for this year’s Booker prize Elmet is a powerful story that carries a dark tone nonetheless it is un-put-down-able. A quite & loving father raises his 2 children off the grid in rural England while the local landowner, seemingly affronted by this man’s lack of obsequience towards him, attempts to exercise his perceived right to control this man and all town’s folk. Naturally conflict & violence ensue. Elmet is a gorgeously written novel that says a great deal about the perversion of power while also paying homage to the natural world and a close knit family
An extraordinary look inside present day Russia from the perspective of several families whose dreams are no different than most but whose challenges are almost beyond belief in terms of how the state impacts nearly every aspect of their lives. A must read for those wishing to understand Russia better.
This classic has been in and out of print several times. In the vein of Bill Bryson (decades before him) and easily as funny and charming Thomson travelled around small towns of coastal Ireland in the 1950’s asking folks about their selkie stories. These are stories woven in Irish folklore of beguiling seal women. Still old country but on the cusp of modernity Thomson gives you a such a gracious sense of the Irish folks and Ireland itself that is so enjoyable you will find yourself reading excerpts to friends.
That’s right – a selection of pointed and erudite essays that explores misogyny both historically and to underscore its pervasiveness in present day culture. You go girl! (woman)
